Sunday 29 April saw our Ladies play their first away match of the season at The Wimbledon Club. The weather was cold and windy, but the rain stayed off. It was agreed that Dani, Lydia and Celine (on her STSC debut) would play on the 3 bubble covered clay courts and Jodie would play on the furthest outdoor clay court… For the loss of a single game, Dani was the first to finish – whilst Celine and Jodie were both still in the first sets of their matches. Lydia soon followed with another convincing straight sets victory. Celine proved that at 13 she is a force to be reckoned with, coming back from 5-2 down in the first set to win 7-6 1-6 6-2 against a wily opponent, who had come through the US college system.
With a 3-0 lead in the bag, Jodie was still battling against the elements, her opponent and the crowd. Having lost a very tight first set 5-7 and having been down 5-4 and 6-5 in the second set, Jodie managed to claw her way to a tiebreak, which she eventually won 14-12, having saved 5 matchpoints! Jodie made a good start in the 3rd set, but then found herself trailing 3-5. Pulling on all her reserves of energy, saving 3 more matchpoints and refusing to be beaten, she managed to fight back to win the set 7-5, securing victory for the team. It was an emotionally charged and physically demanding match that lasted over 3.5 hours!
Jodie and Lydia teamed up at doubles pair 1, but were given a walkover by their opponents, whilst Dani and Laura – a first time pairing – played an excellent match at pair 2, winning 6-2 6-2, with a combination of hard hitting, deft touches at the net and great teamwork.
This was another outstanding result for the Ladies in their first season at Regional level. Well done to all of the players and thank-you to the hardy supporters – Kim, Jackie and Simon.
Unfortunately, the next home match on 13 May has been cancelled due to the opposition having to withdraw from the league, so the next outing will be an away match against Maresfield LTC on Sunday 20 May.
