Tennis Levels at STSC

Here is the complete guide to levels of tennis at Sutton Tennis & Squash Club, junior and senior. This will give you an idea what level you are (or your child) and what kinds of sessions and activities at the club are best for you.......

Tots

Age

3-4

Information

At this age, our goal is to get your child interested in tennis, to have fun and to learn basic skills which will help them in the future development of their tennis - skills such as basic types of movement (running, skipping, jumping, hopping), receiving and sending skills such as throwing and catching, co-ordination skills and the very early stages of hitting a ball with a racket.

What else can my son or daughter do?

All of the exercises that you see us do in the lessons are things that you can do yourself with your child. All activities help, even things as simple as throwing a ball for them to catch or hit. Membership of the club is only £25 for under 8s. Go HERE to find out about membership so that you can play with your child.

Finishing this level

Children will be hitting the ball regularly and will move to red C or red B at around 4.5 / 5 years old.

Red Starter

Age

4-7

Information

At this level, children are sometimes able to hit the ball, sometimes not. During the lessons, we will be aiming to keep things fun and keep them interested in tennis. There won't be a big focus on the technique of the shots because children need to learn 'reception skills' first. This is the ability to understand and position themselves for an incoming ball. Without those skills, proper technique cannot be developed. We also spend lots of time on the 'ABCS' (see glossary). So, in the lessons you will see lots of activites to develop reception skills (see gloassary) and ABCS, the early stages of hitting all the shots (forehand, backhand, volley and serve) and lots of fun and movement.

What else can my son or daughter do?

At this stage, the best thing you can do is still simply playing tennis with your child. You don't need to be able to play tennis yourself as just throwing balls for them to hit is fine. All kinds of catching and movement are also great things to be doing. You can also invest in private lessons. Coaches at STSC range from £12 to £40 per hour for private lessons but they can be split between a few children. Contact Karl Stowell to arrange this. Membership of the club costs £25 per year for under 8s. This makes coaching and camps cheaper and also entitles a parent to play tennis with their child. Go HERE to find out about membership so that you can play with your child.

Finishing this level

By the end of Red Starter, children will be hitting the ball nearly every time. It will be rare to miss the ball completely (on easy shots) as they have developed the necessary reception skills. Children will then move to Red Improver or, if they are 9 years or an older 8 year old, orange Improver.

Red Improver

Age

4-8

Information

At this level, children will be making contact with the ball nearly every time when fed to them in an easy way. Children will be able to rally with a coach, but not consistently with other children. Now that there are some 'receiving and sending' skills in place as well as basic ABCS (agility, balance, co-ordination, speed), we'll teach more of the technique of the shots, but at the same time continuing to develop reception skills and ABCS. Lessons will still be fun and aimed at keeping children interested in tennis, but at the same time starting to learn the game.

The main signs of being ready to move on from here is the ability to play a game of tennis with other children (on a red court). Children will be able to hit all the main shots with some consistency and be starting to understand the rules and tactics of tennis. Children aged 8 & under may move to Red Advance or Red Team, older 8 year olds and 9 year olds will move to Orange Improver or Advance.

Red Advance

Age

5-8

Information

Children will be able to rally with coaches, parents and each other on a red court with red balls (see glossary). Children will also be able to play a game of tennis with each other. This means that, in addition to ABCs and further development of technique, they will also start to learn the tactics of tennis and the rules of the game.

What else can my son or daughter do?

Please continue to play tennis with your child. Nothing beats the volume and repetition of parents playing with their children. However, your child can now play proper games of tennis against other children (on a red court with red balls). How? They can come along to our junior club morning at 11.30am on Saturdays (free for members). You can also arrange for your child to play with other children (contact Karl for help with this).

Your child can start to enter local tournaments as well as regular events which take place at the club. Keep an eye on the club calendar, notice boards and communications from the coaching team.

You can also invest in private lessons. Coaches at STSC range from £12 to £40 per hour for private lessons but they can be split between a few children. Contact Karl to arrange this. Players may join Red Team if they have reached a level where they are able and keen to compete at the club and outside of the club and generally play more tennis.

Around 9 years old, children will move to orange.

Red Team

Age

5-8

Information

Similar to red 1, but this is the highest level of players and is for children who are regularly playing matches - with each other, for the club, entering red tournaments. Lessons will still be fun but more advanced and based around matchplay.

As with all age groups, there is a big focus on ABCS (agility, balance co-ordination, speed), reception skills as well as the technique of all the main shots. We will also have the children playing a game of tennis and learning the rules and tactics of the game.

Players will move to a junior group at around 12 years old.

Adults & Juniors aged 11+

Level 10 (Beginner)

This level is complete beginner. Players will not be able to play a game of tennis on a full size court, may not know the main tennis shots or the rules of the game.

At this level, lessons are necessary. Click Here for junior group lesson details. Click Here for adult group  lessons. You may choose to join the club so that you can use the courts to play with friends and practice. But you can take lessons as a non-member if you prefer.

Visit our membership page for details about joining the club.

We have a team of coaches available to give private / individual lessons at prices ranging from £15 per hour for a 'hitting partner' to about £40 per hour for a more experienced coach. See the coaching team page for details of coaches or contact Karl.

Level 9 (Advanced beginner)

Players who have been playing for a while, have learned the rules of the game, can play all the shots, but with quite low consistency so would still struggle to play a game.

At this level, lessons are necessary. Click Here for junior group lesson details. Click Here for adult group  lessons. You may choose to join the club so that you can use the courts to play with friends and practice. But you can take lessons as a non-member if you prefer.

Level 8 (Lower intermediate)

At this level, players can play a game against a variety of players and may be consistent at lower power, but will lose consistency when faced with power and spin from opponents. These players may not be able to generate power or spin themselves, or if they can it will be with a low level of consistency.

Still getting to grips with the tactical side of the game.

At this level, there are lessons available. Click Here for junior group lesson details. Click Here for adult group  lessons. You may choose to join the club so that you can use the courts to play with friends and practice. But you can take lessons as a non-member if you prefer.

Adults and older juniors can also join in with the Tuesday and Saturday mix in (free for members) and various events organised at the club. Juniors can can join in with junior club morning (free for members - school term only).

Level 7 (higher intermediate)

These may be experienced players or they may be less experienced players, and may display some but not all of the following positive aspects to their game, such as:

  • Good tactical knowledge
  • Hitting with power and / or spin
  • Good movement
  • Good consistency

So a player may be great tactically, but unable to play with power or deal with opponent's power. Or a great mover, but low consistency of shots. Maybe high consistency and power but struggles with movement. Not quite the all round game yet to be in the advanced category.

At this level, there are lessons available. Click Here for junior group lesson details. Click Here for adult group  lessons. You may choose to join the club so that you can use the courts to play with friends, join in the mix ins and other events and practice. But you can take lessons as a non-member if you prefer.

Rounded players who can play all shots with power, spin, consistency and accuracy. Experienced at playing matches and good level of tactical awareness. These players may fit into ladies' 2nd team or junior teams. Men of this level will be just under or in the men's 6th team.
